To complete Phase III and to celebrate the culmination of the Projekt LUFTSCHLOSS the artists invite to roofing ceremony Saturday March 31st at 15 pm Alice-Salomon-Platz.

Im Frühjahr 2012 realisierten die Künstler Anna Borgman und Candy Lenk eine 2300 m3 umfassende Installation auf dem Alice- Salomon-Platz in Berlin-Hellersdorf. Das PROJEKT LUFTSCHLOSS ist Ergebnis einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Unfertigen, Fragmentierten des Ortes und den enttäuschten Hoffnungen auf Permanenz und Ganzheit. Gegliedert in vier Phasen zeigt die Installation Stadien eines Wandlungsprozesses.

In Form einer Baustelle entstand ein Objekt mit dynamischer Gestalt, ein Werk des Übergangs, das in seiner Präsenz bereits die eigene Abwesenheit vorweg nimmt. Die üblicher Weise zum Verhüllen von Bauprozessen verwendeten Materialien werden dabei selbst zu Baustoffen. Die Installation oszilliert in ihrem Ausdruck zwischen Permanenz und Flüchtigkeit, verwurzelter Tektonik einer Baustelle und ortlosem Schweben einer Wolke. Durch die Gerüste und Bauschutznetze, wie sie bei fast jeder Baustelle vorkommen, passt sich das Kunstwerk mimetisch in den Stadtraum ein. Erst seine strukturelle Widersprüchlichkeit offenbart es als künstlerische Intervention.

Die inszenierte Baustelle stellt eine Verknüpfung zu den nie zu Ende geführten Planungen der Großsiedlung Hellersdorf her, denn durch die politische Wende und die Insolvenz des Entwicklungsträgers prägten bis heute nicht fertig gestellte Maßnahmen das fragmentierte Bild des Ortes. Die sich zyklisch ablösenden räumlichen Figuren der Installation erzeugen einen anhaltenden Zwischenzustand. Mit der immer stärker werdenden Gewissheit, dass die Form des Übergangs die eigentlich finale Gestalt abbildet, entsteht ein Werk das beides ist Luft und Schloss zu gleich.

Die Installation ist einer der Preisträger des Wettbewerbs für temporäre Kunstprojekte „Helle Mitte“ und wird gefördert durch das Bund-Länder- Programm Stadtumbau Ost.

The artists Anna Borgman and Candy Lenk realized the installation Luftschloss on  Alice-Solomon-Platz in Berlin Hellersdorf during the spring of 2012. The project Luftschloss is the result of the examination of the fragmentation and incompletion of the space and the disappointed hopes for permanence and wholeness. The installation is 2300 m³ in size and is divided into four phases; showing different stages of transformation . Using the imagery of a construction site, the object receives a dynamic form and becomes a transitional work whose presence already contains its own absence. 

Materials normally used to conceal the construction process become building materials. The installation oscillates between permanence and volatility, the grounded tectonics of a construction site and the placeless hovering of a cloud. Using common place construction scaffolding and protective netting the installation mimics a construction site and thereby blends into the urban landscape It reveals its artistic intention only through its structural discrepancies. 

The staged construction site links back to the never completed plans of the large scale housing development Hellersdorf. Ever since the political system change and the bankruptcy of the development agency, incomplete building projects have shaped the fragmented image of this area. The three-dimensional forms within the scaffolding are changed periodically so that the object is  continuously in an in-between state. The observer is left with the growing realization that the transitional form is the final gestalt of the object. The project becomes cloud and castle at the same time.

The installation is one of the price winners of the temporary art competition “Helle Mitte” and is supported by the joined federal and state program “Stadtumbau Ost”.

1979 begannen die umfassenden Baumaßnahmen für die Großsiedlung Hellersdorf. Sie gehörte neben Marzahn, Hohenschönhausen und Altglienicke zu den großen Neubaugebieten Ost-Berlins. Zum Zeitpunkt der politischen Wende 1989/1990 war die Baumaßnahme Hellersdorf noch nicht abgeschlossen, so dass von den geplanten 46.000 Wohnungen nur 34.000 zur Ausführung kamen. Zur Weiterentwicklung der Großsiedlung Hellersdorf wurde in den 1990er Jahren das Stadtteilzentrum „Helle Mitte“ (ab 1995) errichtet. Im Jahr 1998 wurden die meisten Hochbauarbeiten weitgehend abgeschlossen. Insbesondere die nicht fertig gestellten Maßnahmen im öffentlichen Raum aufgrund der Insolvenz des Entwicklungsträgers und fehlender öffentlicher Investitionen prägten lange Zeit das unfertige Bild der „Hellen Mitte“. Eine zunehmende Verschlechterung wirtschaftlicher Rahmenbedingungen beeinträchtigt(e) die weitere Entwicklung dieses Standortes.

Background: Substantial construction on the housing development Hellersdorf started in 1979. It was one of Berlin’s largest new housing developments along with Marzahn, Altglienicke and Hohenschönhausen. By the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989/ Reunification in 1990, construction had not been completed; only 24.000 of 46.000 apartments were finished. During the 1990s the neighborhood center “Helle Mitte” was constructed to further develop the area. Most of the building construction had been completed by 1998. Due to the bankruptcy of the development agency and missing public funds, especially the planned improvements to the public realm remained incomplete and have shaped the unfinished image of “Helle Mitte” ever since. Furthermore the continual economical decline influences the development of the area.
